First Siegen City Cricket Cup held

On Sunday 05.09. the sports world in the Siegerland was enriched by a new tournament format. At the first Siegen City Cricket Cup, runs and wickets were contested in a tournament for all interested parties at the Siegen Team Sports Park. The format of the tournament was the so-called "20 ball double wicket": a tournament of teams of 2 formed on the spot. Em end of the day, the "Tigers" prevailed over the "Sunrisers". But much more important than the sporting successes was the community spirit and the mission to make the sport of cricket in the Siegerland region a little bit better known. A successful event in cooperation with our department "Integration through Sport", the Municipal Integration Center and our cricket base club, TV Jahn Siegen.

For all those who do not know cricket yet, here is a quick rule overview (source: Sport Thieme)

Equipment: At first glance, cricket resembles baseball, but it has a much longer tradition. The playing equipment includes the flat bat, a mostly red ball, and the wickets, which are made up of three vertical sticks and two sticks lying loosely on top.

Players: For each round (called an inning), two players from the batting team and eleven players from the pitching team face each other on an oval field about 18,000 square meters in size. At the center of the action is an exciting battle between the bowler (pitcher) and the batsmen (batters).

Here's how it's played: The pitcher's goal is to hit the wicket with the ball and destroy it, while the batsman tries to hit the ball with the bat as far as possible across the field. As long as the ball is not back at one of the two wickets, the batsman tries to run back and forth between them as often as he can. With each successful run he collects victory points. The fielding team's task is to recover the ball as quickly as possible and take a wicket. If the batsman is still on the move while a fielder hits the wicket or his batted away ball is caught straight out of the air, he is "out" and replaced by another batsman. This procedure is repeated until all batsmen are out. Then a run (innings) is over and the teams switch parties.

Duration of the game: Batting and pitching require strength and skill. It's also respectful, umpire insults are rare, and if they do, harsh penalties loom. Depending on how many pitches are agreed per bowler or innings, a cricket match can last several hours or even days. In the Bundesliga and championship playoffs, two innings of 50 overs are usually played. This corresponds to a playing time of more than six hours. The "20 ball double wicket" format takes only about 30 minutes per game.
